So, it’s Valentines day again
February 14, 2013. No comments.
February is not the most obvious month for celebrating love is it? The rest of nature knows that Spring is the right time to get excited about all of that.
I’m pretty sure it was invented as a way to distract us from what is surely one of the most depressing times of the year. Which is not a bad idea. But like Christmas, we don’t have to join in the commercial madness. I have known a number of men who make a point of ignoring it for that very reason. On the other hand I don’t know many women who would throw the flowers and chocolates back in your face exclaiming “for pity’s sake, I’m not interested in this tosh!”
This in itself can cause some underlying and unnecessary friction.
There’s always the option to book a table at an over-priced restaurant (better be quick) and listen to the same songs played over and over all night, and dress up nice, and be nice whether you feel like it or not, fall out due to all the pressure to be nice and go home quietly disappointed and with a lot less money again. Or you could just both take the whole thing a lot less seriously and see how that goes.
It’s not that I’m not romantic, indeed, if you are in a long term relationship then why would you NOT want to carve out a few hours this month to appreciate your beloved in some delicious way that you’d both enjoy?
And if you’re not in one – well – it’s always nice to know that someone, somewhere has you on their mind.
But for goodness sake be real. And be creative. No one wants a padded card and a heart-shaped chocolate bar past the age of about 8.
But I could be wrong.
