A Song A Month…. Who’s great idea was that?
February 11, 2016. One comment.
So I had this idea to write and record and release a song every month this year. People seem to love this idea of songs inspired by the months and seasons – a kind of musical calendar if you will. But it does mean I have to….. write, record and release a song every month. And the months go by so quickly! And not only do the songs have to be finished and arranged, I also have to find musicians, and someone to record each one, and make new artwork from the photos, as well as update all the social sites, websites, you tubes and videos and newsletters and blogs I promised and… and….
Writing the song is the easy part, and my favourite part. Although sometimes there is just ONE line of a lyric I haven’t quite decided on… but there is nothing like a mic right in front of you to focus the mind. I say writing is my favourite part but I think it’s on a par with recording it. Or hearing it played on the radio for the first time – say only 5 days after the recording session – like I did tonight.
It has been a learning curve and both a haphazard and fortuitous process so far. More ‘holding on for dear life’ than an elegant glide into the creative unknown. ‘January’ was finished just before Christmas on a writing week at RealWorld in Box, rehearsed in the local pub, performed the next day in public and recorded on the east side of Bath the following Monday.
‘February’ was demoed in my spare room (once I got the mixing desk to work) and recorded on the west side of Bath on a wet, windy day last weekend. Luckily a top cellist dropped in before teatime and added her magic to the arrangement. Pete in Dorset sends me photos of whatever the song inspires in him – which he does in exchange for some harp or singing from me on his new album. He is a very cool singer songwriter as well as a very cool photographer. You know, he does pics of famous people like Eddi Reader, Robert Plant…. And a pot of daffs for my latest song.
‘February.’ Recorded on Saturday and on the radio by Thursday – well, the first mix of it was (we haven’t quite finished it yet) but the show was tonight and they wanted love songs… It’s not really a love song though. And yet, in a way, it is.
So Valentines Day is coming, and then not long after that I will be thinking about the song for March.
You know when you say to yourself in a mocking tone “Who’s great idea was that?” but deep down you know you want to. Exactly. It is certainly keeping me on my toes.
Do tell your friends to subscribe and keep me company while I flounder around in a valiant attempt to bring beauty and art and music and meaning to the dreariest of days.
I reckon by December I will be flying through them like I’ve been doing this all my life.
Well, all year anyway.
